Cronulla Town Centre Stage 2 – Concept Design

The Cronulla Town Centre is a unique and iconic location, strongly valued by the local community and visitors. It has significant historic, recreation and community value, and coupled with the surrounding beaches, forms a strong part of our area’s cultural identity.  In 2015, the Plaza and its surrounds were identified as needing a significant upgrade and an initial design competition explored the qualities that contributed to the Town Centre’s distinctive character and aspirations for the future. This was followed by the development of a Cronulla Public Domain Design Strategy, and after extensive research, collaboration with urban design experts and consultation with community, the Cronulla Town Centre Public Domain Master Plan was prepared and adopted by Council in 2018.

With the Master Plan in place, staged delivery of works commenced in 2018 with the upgrade and modernisation of Stage 1 – Ocean Grove.  To download a copy of the Masterplan, click here.

In 2020, the Council has completed the Schematic Design Phase of Stage 2 of the project which was  undertaken with the assistance of a Stakeholder Reference Group and input from local business owners.  The design is based strongly on the endorsed Masterplan and consists of the main body of the Plaza between the Kingsway and Ocean Grove; the Kingsway footpath between Gerrale and Croydon Streets; and Croydon Lane. 

The Schematic Design was placed on Public Exhibition in September 2020 and a report submitted to Council in December. Based on public feedback and Council input some amendments were made to the scope including removal of the digital screen and water play feature and the inclusion of non- water based play. Construction of the Kingsway commenced in late 2021 following authority approvals and is scheduled for completion in late June 2022. The Town Square and Plaza are now in the detail design phase with construction of the Plaza scheduled for commencement in winter 2023.

At this early stage, investigative works for service location and geotechnical confirmation may be undertaken by specialist contractors.  This work may include noise and dust.  Affected business owners/operators will be directly advised.

About the project 

We are excited to announce that we are upgrading the Sutherland Entertainment Centre.

For over 40 years, Sutherland Entertainment Centre has brought residents and visitors drama, song, music, dance, and more. We are refurbishing the Centre to transform it into a vibrant space for the performing arts in the heart of our community.  

This important work will ensure our arts and performance culture will continue now and into the future.

The project is being funded from Section 96 contributions, SUEZ and borrowings. Council has set aside $41,159 million to plan, design and refurbish the Sutherland Entertainment Centre, including a refreshment to Peace Park.


The upgrade work will be done using good practice energy, environmental and ecological sustainability initiatives, including:

  • Mass timber construction significantly reduces the carbon footprint as it has low embodied energy and is a renewable resource.
  • Retaining the majority of the structure reduces the carbon footprint.
  • Solar panels to reduce power consumption.
  • Optimised mechanical air-conditioning plant, utilising a one pass air system with 100% energy recovery for the theatre.
  • High-efficiency LED lighting.
  • Use of variable speed drives for optimal performance and minimised energy use.
  • High performance façade to limit heat entering the building and reducing air conditioning energy consumption.
  • Reuse of rainwater for irrigation of Peace Park.

We know the importance of fresh air and the new Sutherland Entertainment Centre will use a ‘one-pass-fresh-air-condoning-system’ in the auditorium.  100% fresh outside air will be drawn in that is conditioned to create an ideal environment (1 + 2). Then the energy from the auditorium air is reclaimed prior to it exhausting (3 + 4).  The technology provides energy efficient, outdoor quality fresh air ‘indoors’.   We liked the technology so much that we are also using it in the new foyer for perfectly conditioned fresh air to create an ultra-comfortable environment.

May 2022

The theatre performance and auditorium spaces are coming together nicely, as are the new lifts and amenities.  Many internal walls are now in place, allowing work on more detailed components of the internal framework to commence.  You will also notice changes from the street view as work starts on the building’s external areas and surrounds. 

February 2022

We continue to watch the SEC grow which is exciting, the fly-tower structure is about to reach its maximum height and work on the entry foyer has commenced.  The original theatre is taking shape with a larger stage and ceiling services being installed.  Completion is on track for late 2022 and we can’t wait for the whole community to enjoy the ‘new’ Sutherland Entertainment Centre.

We are hyper-excited that the Sutherland Entertainment Centre’s new fly-tower is taking shape!

The fly-tower is a new addition that houses the scenery sets, that are raised and lowered to the stage.  The build method is the reliable ‘insitu-concrete-wall-construction’.  This refurbishment blends the old with the new to acheive a refreshed venue for the community to enjoy! 

October 2021

Construction work on the new Sutherland Entertainment Centre is back up to full speed with recent concrete pours of the theatre stage, foyer and level 1 back-of-house areas.  The base level of the new fly-tower is also being formed.  The builder, ADCO Constructions, are doing a fantastic job in rejuvenating the ‘good bones’ of the original building.  Completion is still tracking for late 2022, as originally intended.  Sutherland Shire Council can’t wait!
