Building on Liverpool’s great bones, in 2018, the Council undertook a historic rezoning of 25 hectares in the heart of the city to encourage new businesses and double the residential population of the city centre. It is Liverpool’s most significant planning advancement since the city was first designed, and its grid was published by Robert Hoddle in 1827.

The rezoning supports the Council’s vision to foster a modern, vibrant, 18-hour economy and enhance Liverpool as a walkable city centre in which residents are close to work, universities and schools, shops, dining, entertainment, public transport and green space along the Georges River.

The plan provides a cohesive approach to development in the city centre and a useful set of standards for the Council, private developers and local businesses, with 76 Council projects in the pipeline to provide meaningful work during construction.

Developed after extensive consultation with the community, government agencies and businesses, the master plan provides a list of the public infrastructure best to support the vibrant economy of Sydney’s third CBD as Liverpool attracts more residents, workers and visitors.

The Liverpool City Centre Public Domain Master Plan was adopted unanimously by Councillors at the 24 June 2020 Council meeting.

Western Sydney International Airport

Liverpool is the gateway city to Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport, due to open to passengers in 2026. It will be a source of future workers during the construction and operational phases of Sydney’s second international airport.

Under the Western Sydney City Deal, the NSW Government has committed to a rapid bus connection between the Airport, the new Aerotropolis and Liverpool’s CBD in time for the airport’s opening in 2026.

The FAST Corridor will be a key gateway for visitors to Australia, showcasing the unique natural environment of South West Sydney. The corridor will be inviting and vegetated, with transport infrastructure forming part of the landscape. This parkway will reinforce the city’s commitment to effective public and active transport, such as cycling and walking.

The council will also encourage compact medium/high-density development in appropriate locations along the corridor.
